THIS is Bachata.
Bachata arose from people relegated to the Dominican underclass and was regarded as a “lower-class party music,” —the word ‘bachata’ — meant just a “backyard party.” Typical coded antiblack descriptions based on the unimaginative white gaze.
“But in the 1970s, they started using it as an insult.” All of the above processes occurred (and still occur) with African descended cultural manifestations such as bachata. “According to Hernandez, dictator Rafael Trujillo despised bachata. He wanted all music played publicly to reflect a modern society, and bachata players — often poor, rural or uneducated — did not reflect his image of a modern regime. The connotation lingered after Trujillo’s death in 1961.” [source] NPR’s “The Humble Roots Of Old-School Bachata.”
